BMW worked for several years and they developed a new and intriguing car, the i3, which has been revealed recently. The new i3 is an all electric car and even if the German automaker waited for several years, this car definitely worth all this time.
All these years everybody was extremely curious and we followed the development but fortunately today BMW is giving us the full breakdown. The car is going to be available in stores starting from 2014 and the base price for it is going to be somewhere around $41.350.
Unfortunately this does not include the tax incentives or the destination charge that is going to cost you $925 extra. The car has some impressive features taking into consideration the fact that it can produce 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque which is now available from zero rpm.
The car uses a 22 kilowatt, 450 lbs lithium ion battery which is mounted in the rear close of the drive wheels. This battery also helps to improve traction; this is way BMW has chosen to place it there. The car is able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 7 seconds and its top speed is 93 mph.
The EV’s driving range is 80 -100 miles and it needs three hours in order to be charged. If you want to drop the charging time to just 30 minutes then all you have to do is opt for a SAE DC Combo Fast Charger. You can also add a 34 hp two cylinder gas engine generator which is able to act as a range extender. You can choose between the three trim levels: Mega, Giga and Tera.
The car is constructed differently from most other cars especially because it was designed as an EV from the get-go. It Features two different models: Life and Drive. The Life Module is represented by the car’s pilarless passenger cell which is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic.
It is 30% lighter if you compare it with aluminum and we can definitely say that it is stronger. The car weights only 2.700 lbs. When it comes to the Drive Module you must know that it is a 100% aluminum chassis mounted underneath the Life Module. That is the place where the battery is stored. The new i3 is the advancement for BMW due to its lightweight technologies but also due to the fact that it is an EV.
