The Volvo XC90 is a great car, there’s no doubt about that. The only thing rather awkward about it is the vehicle’s outdated look, that’s all. The Swedish automaker seems to have noticed that and as a consequence, it has recently announced that the 2013 XC90 will go through a series of updates.
With the next generation XC90 on track for a late 2014 launch, Volvo declared that the upcoming crossover will feature an evolutionary design similar to the recently presented sketches. There’s not much info about the future model but sources say that it will be equipped with the Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA) four-cylinder engines that promise to be lighter, more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the company’s current six-cylinder units.
In a recent interview, Volvo’s Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Mr. Peter Mertens said that “The new architecture covers about two-thirds of our total sales volume. With about 40 percent of all components shared by all car models irrespective of size, we will benefit from economies of scale, thus boosting our competitiveness.” He added that the savings will enable the company to focus on “individual details that are important to our customers.”
