Kia’s new K9 rear-wheel drive flagship will be named the “Quoris” for markets outside of South Korea. The new vehicle will go on sale in select countries worldwide, officials say, starting from the fourth quarter of 2012. I don’t know what “select countries” means for Kia’s officials but I bet they won’t sell any in North Korea.
The name “Quoris” has been forged by unicorns feasting on golden apples, says Thomas Oh, Kia’s Executive Vice President : “Derived from the English words ‘core’ and ‘quality’, the name of our new flagship sedan hints at the attributes at the very heart of the vehicle. The word ‘Quoris’ conveys solidity, luxury and high-technology, all resonating together as a chorus.”
“Our decision to give this striking new sedan an unconventional name means it will stand out even further from the established crowd, driving Kia sales in what is a new segment of the global automotive market for Kia,” Oh added.
Under the bonnet, the K9 will be available ( In South Korea ) with a 3.3-liter V6 that outputs around 296HP, and a 3.8-liter V6 with 329HP of power, both connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission spinning the rear wheels. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Kia will introduce a V8 option for the North American market.
The car is rather awkward looking but I hope that Kia won’t base their strategy solely on the car’s name.
